Sustainable Transportation
Transportation is fundamental to our society and our economy. It’s the way our food makes it to our plates and how our kids make it to school. We strive to make transportation cleaner and more energy efficient for all.

Since 1998 MEC has partnered with stakeholders of all types to advocate for the use of clean fuels in communities across Kansas & Missouri. We continue to be local experts in alternative fuels and fueling infrastructure thanks to our Clean Cities Coalitions, U.S. Dept. of Energy Program that “advances the nation’s economic, environmental, and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum use in transportation.” The national program is comprised of a network of nearly 75 Coalitions across the U.S. MEC has the honor of housing both the Kansas City Regional and Central Kansas Clean Cities Coalitions.
Our Clean Cities Coalitions bring together both the public and private sector to promote cleaner fuels, fuel efficiency, and new transportation technology. We also keep a finger to the pulse of the alternative fuel industry and its local events and resources. Join us in our efforts to reverse climate change, reduce air pollution, strengthen our local economy, and curb our dependence on petroleum.
Kansas City Regional Clean Cities is MEC’s flagship sustainable transportation program. The program has become a national leader in alternative fuel advocacy, consulting, and projects. Find out more about our transformative KC Clean Cities efforts here.
Based out of Wichita, our Central Kansas Clean Cities program addresses the unique resources and economies of rural Kansas. Discover how the program ensures that underserved communities in Central and Western KS have equal access to clean fuels here.
Our Clean Cities members enjoy our national clean transportation resources and connections via the Department of Energy, as well as grant-writing, technical assistance and consulting, and networking benefits. You can learn more about becoming a member here.
Our Mid-America Green Fleets program provides hands-on consulting services for business and government fleets interested in switching to cleaner fuels, right-sizing your fleet, and other sustainable practices.
Our Green Fleets Analysis will take a comprehensive look at your fleet’s makeup and requirements. From there, we will evaluate areas where you can eliminate inefficiencies and implement fuel alternatives to cut both costs and harmful emissions.
Based on your Green Fleets Analysis, we will work with your fleet managers and decision-makers to help develop a Green Fleets Policy that makes the most sense for your fleet. We will explore fuel efficiency measures, specific alternative fuel options for each vehicle, and specific ROI estimates so you can implement a transportation policy that’s catered to your needs.
When it comes time to deploy, you’ll have access to our Clean Cities Coordinators, who are some of the leading experts in the nation on alternative fuel deployment and adoption. We’ll provide direct consulting services, help you trouble-shoot, connect you to the right vendors, and make sure your switch to clean fuel runs smoothly.
